In and around Lisbon, Portugal – November 2012
Portugal was beautiful. Reminded me of what I had always imagined “old-world Europe” to look like. Small, narrow cobble stoned streets that wound up steep hills (Lisbon is the city of 7 hills). Dotted with colorful houses with clean laundry hanging in the wind.
We also drove right outside the city to Belem and saw Jeronimo’s Monastery. Gorgeously impressive from the outside, but didn’t have time to go in, as we needed to grab ourselves the “best pastry in the world” according to my friend Ian. He was right. I don’t even like pastries, but this custard was phenomenal. We each had 2, but could have easily eaten more.
Then drove out to Sintra which is the old playground of Portugal’s royalty, and visited colorful castles on the hill. Pena Palace is a definite must see if traveling to Portugal.
Our road trip then began up the coast…More to come.
